One common mistake is covering the microphone head with your hand.

When you cover the microphone grille, you can change the microphone’s pickup pattern and affect how it responds to sound. This may make feedback happen more easily, especially when the microphone is close to a loudspeaker.

How should you hold a microphone?

✅ Hold the microphone by its body or handle
✅ Keep the microphone reasonably close to your mouth
✅ Point the microphone toward your mouth
❌ Do not cover the microphone head or grille
❌ Avoid pointing the microphone toward a loudspeaker
